you and Sicily TravelNet. I will be certain to recommend your tours to other cruisers
on a website for cruisers that I visit a lot. Thanks

Vendicari nature reserve
 Roman
mosaics- Villa del Tellaro
|
| | Vendicari
and Roman villa of Tellaro tour

Spend
an unforgettable day in relaxation on this day trip that combines Vendicari nature
reserve, the southernmost representative marshland of Europe and the hidden
archeaological treasures of the Tellaro villa, a fine example of late imperial
Roman mosaics, brought to light inside an ancient 17th century farm house. | | | | | | We
stop at one of the three entrances to the nature reserve of Vendicari,
basically a wide coastal strip that consists of hides, several shallow lagoons
(pantani), dunes and sand beaches, completely free from the influence of people.
Vendicari is regarded as one of the few places where one can still admire the
unique Mediterrenean vegetation and can also observe the migration of hundreds
of species of birds coming from northern Europe and Russia heading towards the
African continent. Walk to the the tower (Torre Sveva) built by Peter of
Aragon in the 15th century to protect the coast against pirates . There are also
remains of a tonnara (tuna fishery) and basins cut from the rock in which
fish would have been processed to make garum (a strong- tasting sauce made
from fish guts which the Romans used like ketchup). Then on to the Tellaro
Roman villa, dating from the 4th century A.D and still displaying some
of its magnificent polychrome mosaics. The villa, not entirely excavated, can
be compared to the the celebrated Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina.
Not far from the Tellaro river, the villa is spaced around a square peristyle.
We'll admire exquisite mosaic floors adorned with geometric designs, hunting scenes,
erotic scenes and a story taken from Homer's Iliad: Achilles delivering the body
of Hector to Priam, after avenging the death of his friend Patroclus. .
