| | Valletta,
City of the Knights
Valletta
is the capital of Malta and a Unesco World Heritage site. Its history is inextricably
linked to the history of the military and charitable Order of the Knights of St
John who planned the city as a refuge to care for injured soldiers and pilgrims
during the Crusades in the 16th century. Benjamin Disraeli described Valletta
as "a city of palaces built by gentlemen for gentlemen," and remarked
that "Valletta equals in its noble architecture, if it does not excel,
any capital in Europe". Its 320 monuments, all within an area of 55 ha,
make it one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, an intense
mixture of baroque architecture , streets, piazzas, churches, museums, auberges
(Knights' inns or officers' quarters), forts and and bastions

| | Our
guided tour of Malta's capital city starts from the Upper Barakka Gardens,
laid down in the mid 17th Century to provide a peaceful retreat for the pastime
and relation of the Knights. Enjoy a breath- taking view of the Grand Harbour
and walk along the bustling streets of Valletta passing by Auberge de Castille,
currently home to the Prime Minister's office. Stop at St John's Co-Cathedral,
the main burial place of the Knights. The church boasts some of the most beautiful
works of art by Mattia Preti and Caravaggio including the famous "Beheading
of St. John".
Then, we visit the Grand Masters' Palace, formerly the residence of the
Grand Masters of the Order. In 1800 it became the official residence of the British
governors. The palace is now the Presidential Office and Malta's Parliament house.
There you'll get the chance to learn about the lifestyle of the Grand Masters
whilst admiring the knights' armouries, one of the largest collections
of its kind in the world.
