Serradifalco tour.
A day trip in the heart of Sicily

Serradifalco, Sicily

Serradifalco is located on a hilly area, twenty- one km. away from Caltanissetta, 504 meters above the sea level.
The town was founded in 1640 by Leonardo Lofaso
Pietrasanta who in 1665 became Duke.
According to the tradition the name “Serradifalco”
comes from the Spanish “Sierra” that means hill, so
“area where the eagles make their nest"

The tour starts
from Piazza San Francesco where we can admire the homonymous church, built in the 17century in baroque style. Then, we go to via Duca to see the Palazzo Ducale and the “Chiesa Madre” dedicated to San Leonardo Abate, patron saint of the town, celebrated on the second Sunday of August. The church, built in 1740 in neoclassic style, has valuable works by the artist Giancarlo Viviano from Palermo.

We continue our walk along the streets of the town and admire other churches: “Chiesa Immacolata” , the small “Chiesa di San Giuseppe”. Finally we reach the “Chiesa del Calvario” that rises on a hill from which we can enjoy a magnificient view of the town and countryside. In front of the church every year on holy Friday is represented “La Scinnenza”.

Our itinerary ends with a panoramic tour around the nature reserve of “Lago Soprano”: its fauna is characterized by the numerous species of birds and anphibians.

Since Serradifalco has a cookery vocation it is advisable to make a gastronomic stop to better appreciate the tipycal local products such as ricotta, cheese, salsiccia and above all the famous “stigliola.
