excursion is a must for anyone who travels to Palermo. Don't miss one of the most
superb churches in the world. The story begins in 1174 when King William claimed
that the Virgin revealed to him in a dream the location of a great treasure... | | | | We
will drive to the hill town of Monreale, just outside Palermo, and visit
the famous twelfth century Cathedral. Founded by the Norman King William
II, this monumental church puts together the best efforts of Norman, Byzantine
and Arab artists and architects. The interior walls are decorated with 6,340 square
meters (almost 70,000 square feet) of gold and polychrome mosaics!
Inside the
adjacent Benedictine Abbey, we will visit the Cloister, which reflects
the Sicilian Norman kings' tendency towards Arab culture.
At the nearby belvedere,
the view overlooking Palermo is truly spectacular.
This
is a half day tour but it can become a full-day excursion with the visit of a
winery just outside Palermo (Corvo di Salaparuta Winery at Casteldaccia).
