an excellent wine tasting tour for my wife and I during
a recent visit to Sicily. We visited three very interesting wineries on the slopes
of Mt Etna. We tasted the full range of wines grown on the mountain's volcanic
slopes, finding the lovely bouquets and crisp acidity of whites made from local
grapes Caricante and Catarrato particularly appealing. Three is the right number
of vineyards to visit in single day and Sicily Travelnet's selection of wineries
was perfect - as was their organisation, courtesy and punctuality.. We also learned
much local lore
and history from our fluent English-speaking driver during

vineyards and sweet wine are testified in the area of Siracusa, Modica and Camarina
(`Mesopotamian' wine) in Greek and Roman times. In 1808, the Abbot Paolo
Balsamo wrote: ”The countryside of Vittoria produces a discreet quantity
of wheat, grains
and legumes, lots of olive oil, hemp and carobs; but above
all wine, which is highly recommended as the best of Sicily”. The Abbot

winery in the Eloro DOC area is the starting point of our
itinerary.
In the past the wines of Eloro were used to give body to continental thin wines.
These days, the red wines made with the local grape varieties of Frappato,
Pignatello and Nero d'Avola have been given their D.O.C. appellation.
After visiting the winery we will sample their
best wines.
Then, we drive
to Ragusa Ibla, one of Sicily's five UNESCO World
Heritage Sites.The
whole town is on a hilltop with the houses and
pathways wrapping around the
hill, and balconies with grotesque
gargoyle- like figures symbolizing various
stories and family lore.
Stop for lunch in a typical trattoria in the historical
centre of the Cathedral's square of Ragusa Ibla,
In the afternoon, after a
relaxing walk along the baroque streets of
Ibla, we will enjoy the visit of
another top rated winery for the
production of the only DOCG wine of Sicily:
Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a superior table wine made from the vinification
of red Frappato grapes and named after its magnificent colour. We will,
then, head back to
