Gorge and Francavilla tour 
The Alcantara river has its source in the Nebrodi Mountains,
at 1,250 m of altitude near Floresta, and it runs for about 50 km. Before flowing
into the sea near Capo Schisò, its bed becomes narrower and it runs through
the bays of the famous Arab bridge "Al qantar" (meaning “the bridge”),

prehistoric
and proto-historic times lava flows repeatedly obstructed or changed its course.
As the lava was cooled much more quickly by the water than it would have done
otherwise, it crystallised in the form of high walls characterized by sub-vertical
column structures that can be “organ-pipe shaped”, slightly bent
and “harp-shaped”, “fan-shaped". Over the millenia,
the river naturally eroded a channel through these columns, creating impressive
gorges and "ravines" such as the "Gole dell'Alcantara".
Upon arrival we descent on foot and we will discover a spectacular view of
the whole area at the entrance of the gorge. The beautiful stone cliffs tower
forms pentagonal and hexagonal prisms, irregular shapes which interplay with the
light, creating forms both graceful and monstrous. A natural botanical reserve
is located in the park: your guide, which is an expert in botanic, will give you
all the information. Afterwards, we continue our tour by exploring Francavilla
di Sicilia where a violent battle took place between the Spaniards and Austrians.
Here we will visit the Capuchin Monastery founded in the 16C.
